May 24, 2019 · Plugged the voltage regulator wire in and the headlights in and now the tractor wont start. Pulled the spark plug and no spark. Also, no spark at the points. The condenser (basically a capacatior) is in place because when the magnetic field collapses in the primary circuit, a short voltage spike is introduced to that circuit as well.
The coil only has a voltage "each" time a spark plug fires. It doesn't have "constant" voltage. Pull the fuse/relay for the fuel pump. So you don't dump fuel into the motor when your testing the ignition system. Now for the fun part: 1.Pull off the passenger valve cover (if this was not a FORD you would be pulling off the drivers cover).
The coil is pretty simple - it gets 12 (or 6) constant volts on the + terminal. The - terminal is grounded on and off, each time it is grounded, the internal field collapses and sends voltage out the center terminal to the distributor and eventually the spark plugs. Instead of using a test light like I do with other Chrysler’s, where the PCM coil driver is the actual ground for the coil, I used my logic probe.

The secondary circuit consists of the secondary windings in the coil, the high tension lead between the distributor and the coil (commonly called the coil wire) on external coil distributors, the distributor cap, the distributor rotor, the spark plug leads and the spark plugs.
The basic strategy was to replace the ignition coil with an exciter, or source, coil producing, at speed, about 300 volts DC. This coil generates an output for each of the six magnet passes per revolution regardless of the state of the points and so it will generate more total energy than is associated with the single magnet passing under the ignition coil for the standard inductive ignition.
Interrupting the ground path causes the coil to generate a spark. Terminal "G" is the input to the module. When the voltage at G is higher than about 1.6 volts, the C terminal is grounded which completes the ignition coil's ground path. When the voltage at G is lower than about 1.4 volts, terminal C is open.

And this is why it was parked to begin with. I pulled the main coil wire from the Ignition coil to the Distributor cap and that wire is producing no spark. In further investigation I put a second coil on from a known working unit and still no luck. I tested the voltage going into the coil and I'm getting zero volts.

Make sure you have 12 volts to the common wire (red/white) on the coils. Then check all the connections in the headlight bucket that are ignition related and clean them with a good contact cleaner. The tractor ran fine with the resistor block (factory spec part) inline with the 12 volt coil feed. But spark was too weak with the ceramic resistor inline.
It's 1-2-4-3 in case you don't already know. But if it's a 6 volt coil don't keep the key on for very long with the resistor by-passed or you will be buying a new coil. I'm getting -12 volts to the negative side of the coil if I check from ground. Not getting 12 volts when checking positive and negative posts of the coil.
